With the program, students are enrolling at UCLA Extension and graduate with an official UCLA Extension certificate. All academic content and course instruction is provided by UCLA Extension.

Empowered is a for-profit company, which has developed technology and services to enable the delivery of UCLA Extension certificate programs on an iPad app to those seeking a career change or enhancement.
An Apple iPad is required for all enrolling students. Students download our revolutionary iPad app, allowing them to participate in the UCLA Extension certificate program anywhere anytime.
Empowered has created an online career assessment tool to help match prospective students with the best possible certificate program we offer.
Enrolled UCLA Extension students become part of the Career Empowerment Program - designed by Empowered. The Career Empowerment Program provides personal career counseling to help students reach their career goals, whether that be switching careers or gaining a promotion.
The Mission
A unique, new, online educational experience that delivers the world-class professional training of UCLA Extension through a groundbreaking iPad app, combined with comprehensive career guidance for adults who need career enhancement or redirection.
The Cause
With high unemployment throughout the nation, the competitive job market has placed increased demands on candidates to update their skills. For example, many members of the baby boom generation are unable to retire due to financial constraints, thus increasing the need for professional training and career guidance. Others wish to move in a different direction and to establish an "encore" career in order to pursue a passion or to make a contribution in the education or nonprofit sectors.
Empowered UCLA Extension addresses the growing needs of the seasoned workforce by teaching them new skills and providing necessary tools for today's job market. Interest in our program cuts across the board to many audiences who have the need to enhance or change their careers, or a desire to continue their education for personal fulfillment.
Our Story
Three of California’s greatest assets are the academic excellence at UCLA, the technology and innovation of Silicon Valley and the power of Hollywood to influence social movements.
Empowered UCLA Extension brings all three of these forces together to create a new opportunity for the millions of baby boomers and other adults who have been displaced in the workforce, are looking to enhance their current career, or are looking to make their next career move.
The Sherry Lansing Foundation, which has pioneered work in late-career job training, was a motivating force behind the company and conceptualized Empowered with the Creative Artists Agency (CAA). A founding partner, CAA is the world’s leading entertainment and sports agency with extensive experience in marketing and brand-building. CAA has long been actively involved in education initiatives on the local, state and national levels through the CAA Foundation, the agency’s philanthropic arm. The agency has accessed its vast resources and expertise to help market the program nationally.
The Sherry Lansing Foundation and CAA recruited Silicon Valley entrepreneur Steve Poizner to help establish Empowered. With a successful background of building high-tech companies, Poizner helped co-found the company and took on the role of Empowered’s CEO.
UCLA Extension, a nationally recognized leader in adult education, was identified to be the academic foundation of this new effort.
On June 23, 2011, Empowered and UCLA Extension announced the partnership and work on this new, comprehensive online education experience commenced. The goal was to create an innovative online learning environment married with career-based courses, and to couple it with goal setting, planning, and career coaching to enable students to meet their goals and achieve overall career empowerment.
